Data center regulations included in the new framework

The upcoming Australian Standards for AI will impose requirements on major data center operators. These companies will need to support new electricity supplies, cover connection costs, and reduce power consumption during grid stress periods. The standards will also address water efficiency and require consultation with state, territory, and local authorities. The National Cabinet is scheduled to review these standards in August 2026, with legislation expected to be introduced to Parliament in early 2027.

Australian artists seek seats in new federal AI office
Australia’s new AI office faces calls to include artists and copyright holders.

The Office of AI will supervise the implementation of these standards across federal agencies and coordinate with other jurisdictions within Australia. Additionally, the government plans to establish national consumer safety initiatives, building on the recently formed AI Safety Institute. While opposition members have expressed concerns about increased bureaucracy and regulatory burdens, the Greens have called for stronger legal safeguards. The full composition of the Office, including advisory panels and procedures for industry participation, has not yet been disclosed.
