BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has initiated a procurement deal worth €2.1 million for PCR tests to aid the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak. These open-platform tests aim to enhance infection detection and bolster laboratory infrastructure amidst the crisis. The acquisition was coordinated with assistance from the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. Shipments are set to start in August, providing additional diagnostic resources as health authorities face increasing case counts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

EU expands Ebola response with €2.1 million PCR tests
EU diagnostic support expands as health authorities respond to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.

The PCR testing kits will be sent to the World Health Organization’s Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics located in Dubai. WHO will oversee their distribution to regions involved in the Ebola containment efforts. PCR diagnostics are vital for confirming infections, as laboratories can handle numerous samples with high precision. These devices are compatible with existing lab setups, allowing quicker confirmation of cases to facilitate patient treatment, isolation procedures, and contact tracing efforts.

This procurement builds upon a prior European Commission agreement that allocated €2.5 million for rapid molecular point-of-care testing devices and related instruments. These supplies will be allocated to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Collectively, the two initiatives elevate the Commission’s recent diagnostic aid investments to €4.6 million. These actions form part of a broader European strategy to support the Ebola emergency in Bundibugyo, which continues to strain healthcare systems across parts of Central and East Africa.

Diagnostic assistance grows as the outbreak intensifies

By August 12, WHO reported that the Democratic Republic of the Congo had recorded 4,665 confirmed cases and 2,184 deaths. The outbreak affected 54 health zones spanning six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. WHO characterized this as the largest Ebola outbreak ever documented in the country. The agency also noted that transmission remains highly active, with interconnected geographic clusters contributing to ongoing spread within affected regions.

On August 14, WHO maintained its highest national risk level for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It rated the risk for neighboring nations as high and for other regions as low. After its second meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on August 24, WHO issued updated temporary guidelines. These include recommendations for surveillance, case detection, infection prevention, clinical management, community participation, and measures related to domestic movement and mass gatherings.

European support now totals €493 million in emergency aid

The European Commission announced the mobilization of €493 million toward emergency relief, vaccines, treatments, and health security efforts in the Great Lakes and Uganda regions. European health agencies have also contributed to surveillance, laboratory operations, and preparedness actions during the Ebola outbreak. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to assess the risk to Europeans as very low, considering the requirement for direct contact with infectious fluids and the low probability of sustained transmission within Europe.

The Bundibugyo outbreak remains a public health emergency of international concern, a status declared by WHO on May 17. Unlike the more prevalent Zaire ebolavirus, the Bundibugyo strain currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. WHO emphasizes the importance of surveillance, rapid diagnosis, patient isolation, clinical care, infection prevention, and contact monitoring as core response strategies. The latest PCR procurement by the European Commission enhances laboratory capacity for these efforts, while WHO and Africa CDC coordinate health operations alongside national authorities in affected and nearby regions.

(AI-generated image) The allocated funds directly support the ongoing partnership between Europe and the African Union, focusing on building sustainable healthcare capacities. This initiative is a key element of the broader European Global Health Resilience Initiative, launched to address systemic vulnerabilities within medical systems. By targeting specific infrastructural gaps, regional authorities aim to establish independent healthcare networks capable of enduring severe infectious disease outbreaks. The structured distribution of funding guarantees that essential medical supplies reach vulnerable populations while fostering the development of regulatory frameworks necessary for long-term institutional stability across Africa. A considerable part of the budget is dedicated to advancing medical research and laboratory capabilities. The European Commission allocated 6.5 million euros specifically to expand sustainable pathogen genomics capacity among member countries. Additionally, over 30 million euros are earmarked for clinical research projects and comprehensive pandemic preparedness programs. These targeted investments will enable local healthcare professionals to swiftly sequence dangerous pathogens, empowering regional health authorities to implement effective containment strategies without relying solely on foreign diagnostic labs during critical public health emergencies. European Commission Allocates Funds For African Health Systems Efforts to stabilize regional health infrastructure remain a central focus within this comprehensive funding plan. Financial documents confirm a dedicated 7.5 million euro allocation aimed at strengthening institutional health resilience specifically in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This targeted geographic investment addresses critical vulnerabilities within the national healthcare system, providing vital resources to combat recurring endemic diseases.
