South Korea’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Reach New Four-Year Peak in August

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – In August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves experienced their largest monthly jump ever, according to the Bank of Korea. By month’s end, reserves totaled $442.28 billion, marking a $14.33 billion rise from $427.95 billion at the end of July. This increase is the most significant since the reserve data series started in 1971 and also represents the highest level since May 2022.

South Korea reserves climb record $14.33 billion in August
South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves reached $442.28 billion at the end of August.

The boost in August continued a three-month upward trend in South Korea’s foreign reserves, following increases of $370 million in June and $590 million in July. The August addition far exceeds those prior gains and also beats the previous record monthly increase of $14.29 billion set in May 2009. Despite this substantial rise, reserves still remain below the peak of $469.21 billion reported in October 2021.

The central bank attributed the August growth to several quantifiable factors. Foreign currency deposits held by financial institutions grew during this period, and returns on reserve assets also contributed to the overall rise. Fluctuations in currency exchange rates increased the dollar value of assets denominated in other currencies. Since the Bank of Korea measures the nation’s reserve holdings in U.S. dollars, exchange rate shifts can influence their reported value without affecting the actual amount of foreign assets.

Foreign securities remain the primary component of reserves

At the end of August, foreign securities made up the majority of South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves. Their value rose by $7.07 billion from July to reach $387.07 billion, accounting for 87.5% of the total reserve holdings. This category includes government and corporate securities kept as reserve assets. Foreign currency deposits also saw a significant increase, climbing by $7.17 billion in August and reaching $30.30 billion by month’s end.

Special drawing rights grew by $60 million to $15.77 billion, while South Korea’s reserve position stood at approximately $4.34 billion. Gold holdings remained unchanged at $4.79 billion. Even with the notable increase in deposits, securities continued to dominate the reserve portfolio, and the combined growth of securities and foreign currency deposits accounted for nearly all of the $14.33 billion rise in the month’s overall foreign reserves.

Reserves reach four-year high thanks to August boost

The reserve level of $442.28 billion marks the highest point in over four years. The last time South Korea reported a higher total was in May 2022, with reserves at $447.71 billion. These latest figures bring the country closer to pre-decline levels that followed the October 2021 peak. The official foreign reserves encompass securities, deposits, gold, special drawing rights, and the country’s reserve position in the international monetary system.

Foreign exchange reserves serve as a vital pool of foreign currency assets that support international transactions and cover external financial obligations. South Korea’s monthly reporting provides a regular snapshot of its reserve status. August’s data not only set a record for the monthly increase but also marked the highest overall balance since May 2022. This shift reflects a significant departure from the modest reserve increases observed in June and July, although the total remains below South Korea’s historical maximum.

Korean Semiconductor and Export Sector Show Record Growth in October Data

    Business October 22, 2026

In the first 20 days of October, South Korea’s exports surged to $61.6 billion, more than doubling compared to the same period last year, driven by record-breaking semiconductor shipments. The Korea Customs Service published these figures on Wednesday. The average daily exports, calculated over working days, increased to $4.74 billion, marking the highest for any first 20-day period in history. Meanwhile, imports grew by 42.8% to $47.1 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $14.5 billion. The primary contributor to this growth was semiconductors, with exports of chips soaring 222.5% to $27.5 billion during this period, indicating shipments of about $8.5 billion in the previous year. Semiconductors represented 44.7% of total exports, the largest share among all product categories. Exports to China and the US Experience More Than Doubling During the first 20 days of October, exports to China increased by 154.4% year on year. Similarly, shipments to the United States rose by 154.9%, slightly surpassing the growth seen with China. Exports to Vietnam and the European Union also saw gains over the same timeframe, according to customs data. These figures reflect rising demand across South Korea’s top export markets simultaneously. While exports expanded at a faster rate, imports grew more slowly, up 42.8% to $47.1 billion.
