KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – The United Nations along with partner organizations are requesting $49.6 million to aid flood-affected communities in Nepal. The four-month flash appeal aims to assist 84,270 individuals impacted by the disaster on August 26. This target includes 19,284 households across 17 municipalities within six districts. Nearly 40% of those in need are children. The primary focus of the response is on Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, and Tanahu. Meanwhile, Nepalese authorities continue ongoing relief and recovery operations across the affected regions.

Nepal flood appeal targets 84,270 people with $49.6m
Nepal flood relief efforts focus on emergency aid for families across six affected districts.

The catastrophe was triggered by a glacial collapse that caused a powerful surge of water, mud, and debris. Floodwaters swept through communities along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system and adjacent areas. As of September 6, over 1,300 lives had been lost throughout Nepal, with nearly 5,000 people still missing as search efforts persisted. Rescue teams have also investigated hydropower tunnels and settlements buried in mud. Several survivors have been recovered days after the floods struck.

Flood damage has affected roads, bridges, homes, schools, power infrastructure, and local water systems. Some mountain villages remain hard to access because transport connections have been destroyed or blocked. The emergency appeal aims to support Nepal’s government-led response to these challenges by providing shelter, food, healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and protection services. Additionally, aid efforts include plans to restore electricity access and support rural livelihoods. Preparation for winter is also integrated into the four-month humanitarian plan.

    Relief strategy prioritizes core services

The appeal includes direct cash aid where local markets remain operational for affected families. Relief teams are also equipped to supply cold-weather shelter materials and portable solar devices. Water assistance encompasses repairs, purification systems, and hygiene supplies. Health services cover emergency treatment and nutritional support. Protection initiatives focus on children separated from their families. Food aid and livestock support are also included within the plan. These measures aim to meet immediate needs across communities impacted by the Nepal floods.

Access remains a significant logistical obstacle in northern Nepal. Damaged roads and bridges have hindered relief deliveries to upper Rasuwa, with some locations accessible only on foot. Recent assessments identified 3,844 displaced individuals living at 34 sites across four areas. They also reported 4,288 affected households, including 2,886 displaced households. These figures highlight the ongoing demand for shelter, clean water, food, and basic services as relief efforts expand.

Relief supplies arrive in flood-affected districts

UNICEF received 84 metric tonnes of emergency supplies in Kathmandu on September 4, destined for flood-affected communities. The shipment included water tanks, hygiene kits, water treatment tools, diarrhoea treatment equipment, tents, winter clothing, and educational materials. Trucks have begun transporting these supplies toward Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. These deliveries are crucial for ensuring access to safe water, disease prevention, health services, and educational needs for children and families affected by the floods.

The $49.6 million appeal covers ten humanitarian sectors through the end of 2026. Food security accounts for approximately $7.94 million of the funding, while water and sanitation needs total around $7.9 million. Health-related requirements are roughly $7.6 million, and logistics and emergency telecommunications need about $7.33 million. Shelter needs are estimated at $7.1 million. Collectively, these five sectors constitute the majority of the appeal as Nepal continues to respond to one of its most severe recent flood disasters.
