Djokovic tops ATP rankings, Sabalenka No. 2

The Australian Open championship returned Novak Djokovic to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday. During the 50-year history of computerized rankings for men’s tennis, his rise from No. 5 to No. 1 is the largest jump from No. 5 to No. 1. Aryna Sabalenka’s first major title moved her up to No. 2 in the WTA rankings, behind only three-time major champion Iga Swiatek.

No. 3 Ons Jabeur, twice a Slam finalist in 2022, is followed by No. 4 Jessica Pegula, No. 5 Caroline Garcia and No. 6 Coco Gauff. Alcaraz ranks No. 2. A 19-year-old, he became the youngest No. 1 after winning the U.S. Open in September. Due to a leg injury, Alcaraz missed the Australian Open.

Nadal fell to No. 6 after injuring his left hip flexor against Mackenzie McDonald of the United States in the second round. With his run in Melbourne, Tsitsipas moved from No. 4 to No. 3; if he had won, he would have become No. 1. The Netherlands’ Casper Ruud, who lost in the second round to United States’ Jenson Brooksby, dropped from No. 3 to No. 4. With a quarterfinal appearance, Andrey Rublev is No. 5.

Legal Challenges in Social Media Sector Gain Momentum as Courts Advance Cases Against Major Platforms

    News August 12, 2026

Social media addiction lawsuits are expanding across federal and state courts. The dispute centers partly on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. Meta and TikTok argued the law shielded them from claims tied to warnings about allegedly addictive platforms. The appeals court said Section 230 provides a defense against liability, rather than immunity from being sued. That distinction prevented an immediate appeal at this stage. The ruling left earlier orders from the federal trial court in place without deciding whether the companies ultimately bear liability. Individuals, families, school districts, municipalities, and states are among the plaintiffs. They accuse Meta, Alphabet’s Google, ByteDance’s TikTok, and Snap of designing platforms that foster compulsive use among youth. These lawsuits connect those alleged design features to issues such as depression, anxiety, body image concerns, and other damages. The defendants have contested these allegations. Plaintiffs are seeking damages, penalties, and restitution in the federal proceedings. Approximately 3,300 additional cases with similar claims have been consolidated in California state court. Separate Meta litigation proceeds in Oakland.
