Michigan Food Safety Alert: Two Cyclospora-Related Deaths Confirmed Amid Outbreak Investigations

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – The state of Michigan has announced the death of two individuals linked to its 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak, marking the first fatalities identified within the state’s investigation. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 11,234 cases as of August 3, with 193 hospitalizations documented through July 30. Medical records indicated that both victims had significant underlying health conditions that may have been worsened by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. Authorities stated they will not disclose further details about these two cases.

Michigan outbreak update confirms two cyclospora deaths
Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak.

Both individuals fell ill prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. On August 3, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged the Michigan fatalities, describing them as deaths related to cyclosporiasis involving individuals with pre-existing health issues. The total number of cases in Michigan includes all reports during the ongoing investigation and may be updated. Federal surveillance data generally encompass laboratory-confirmed cases and may differ from state figures that also account for probable illnesses.

In addition, federal authorities are scrutinizing a nine-state Cyclospora outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, nine states had reported 1,947 infected individuals, many of whom also reported exposure to Taco Bell. At least 98 patients required hospitalization according to federal data. The illnesses started between June 22 and July 20. The CDC later confirmed Michigan’s two deaths, which were not included in the detailed totals published on July 24.

Recall targets iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico

Taylor Farms de Mexico has withdrawn all iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The recall involved multiple food-service products and Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce available at selected Walmart stores. The affected products’ use-by dates ranged from July 18 through August 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed the contaminated lettuce across 27 states, while Taco Bell ceased using lettuce from the supplier on July 17.

Michigan officials have yet to attribute every case in the state to the recalled iceberg lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has indicated that lettuce or salad greens remain a potential source, but no single product, grower, or supplier has been conclusively identified for the entire outbreak. Other food items have not been entirely ruled out as possible contributors. The federal outbreak linked to lettuce accounts for only part of the cyclosporiasis activity reported nationwide.

    Symptoms may persist if untreated

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal disease caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora. Infection can occur through ingestion of contaminated food or water. Typical symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. Symptoms generally appear about a week after exposure but can vary. If untreated, the illness can last over a month, with symptoms sometimes resolving only to recur later.

Health officials recommend that consumers avoid eating any recalled iceberg lettuce still in their possession. The product should be discarded or returned to the point of purchase. Surfaces and containers that came into contact with the recalled lettuce should be thoroughly cleaned. Individuals exhibiting symptoms should seek medical advice, especially if they consumed iceberg lettuce within the past two weeks. Michigan continues to update the number of cases as investigations by state and local health authorities proceed.
