LAHORE, PAKISTAN / RankWire.AI / – As Pakistan grapples with renewed inflation pressures, consumers in Lahore are paying significantly higher prices for essential foods than the government’s notified rates. Despite official reductions, many retail outlets have not matched these prices. This week, substantial gaps appeared between the official rates and actual market prices for chicken, vegetables, and fruit. The soaring costs are burdening households amid national consumer inflation reaching double digits and increasing fuel prices adding to the financial strain.

After authorities cut the notified price of chicken to Rs461 per kilogram by Rs22, retailers in Lahore charged between Rs520 and Rs570. Potatoes, officially priced between Rs27 and Rs30, were sold for Rs50 to Rs70. Tomatoes, with official rates from Rs130 to Rs180, reached Rs250 to Rs300 at markets. Onions sold for Rs200 to Rs220, despite a ceiling of Rs175 set by officials.

A similar pattern was observed with other vegetables. Spinach, officially priced at Rs57 to Rs60, fetched up to Rs120 in markets. Farm cucumbers, listed at Rs85 to Rs90, were sold for as much as Rs150. The disparity was even more pronounced in fruit prices: dates, officially between Rs310 and Rs435 per kilogram, were available for Rs800 to Rs2,400 retail.

Inflation Accelerates amid Rising Fuel Prices

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reports show consumer inflation reached 11.1% in August, up from 9.2% in July. Urban inflation was 10.4%, with rural areas experiencing 12.2%. The agency’s weekly price index rose 8.62% from the previous year as of the week ending September 10. Onion prices surged by 125.52% year-on-year. Meanwhile, LPG increased by 55.42%, diesel by 45.26%, petrol by 39.10%, and wheat flour by 30.18%.

In response, the federal government approved on September 14 a targeted fuel relief scheme via the Economic Coordination Committee. The program grants Rs500 weekly to eligible two- and three-wheelers. Car owners with engines up to 800cc will receive Rs1,000 every 10 days. Assistance is limited to non-commercial users and one vehicle per owner, with the Ministry of IT and Telecom overseeing the digital Fuel Pass System.

Education Data Reveal Persistent Structural Challenges

Pakistan’s official social indicators reveal significant education gaps alongside ongoing cost-of-living increases. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the national literacy rate stands at 63% for individuals aged 10 and above. Male literacy is at 73%, whereas female literacy is 54%. Urban literacy reaches 74%, with rural areas at 55%. Punjab’s literacy rate is 68%. The latest household survey indicates that 28% of children aged five to 16 remain out of school.

Government figures show a total of Rs962 billion was spent on federal and provincial education in fiscal 2025, representing 0.8% of GDP. The out-of-school rate in Punjab is 21%, according to recent data. Although these figures do not directly attribute Lahore’s retail price disparities to education levels, they highlight another major challenge for the country. Meanwhile, Punjab authorities continue publishing official market rates, while consumers in Lahore face substantial discrepancies between those figures and reported retail prices.
