MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching a total of 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. In the same period of 2025, the figure was 35,935.3 GWh. According to preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, growth was observed across multiple governorates. This rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the national output during the first eight months of the year. In August alone, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the most rapid growth in total electricity output, with a 204.8% increase from the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a 44.1% rise, and Al Wusta saw an 8.4% increase. Electricity generation in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah grew by 5.5%. Dhofar also saw growth, with an increase of 4.6% from January to August. Data indicated broad expansion across most regions covered in the national statistics.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decrease of 16.4% in electricity output. Musandam produced 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional figures highlighted notable disparities in electricity growth across Oman during the reporting period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified the data as preliminary. These figures encompass electricity generation through the end of August 2026.
Net electricity output increases by 4.6%
By August 2026, Oman’s net electricity production had risen by 4.6%, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the same period of 2025. This measurement includes regional purchases made by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led in growth, with net production surging by 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah saw an increase of 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar experienced gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output grew by approximately 1,592.1 GWh year on year.
Net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.4% from the previous year. Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah recorded a 16.6% decline in net output. Musandam’s net electricity generation was 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional data generally followed the trend seen in total electricity output, with national net production remaining above the levels seen in the first eight months of 2025.
Water production drops across Oman in 2026
Oman’s water output declined by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same eight months of 2025, production was approximately 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% decrease, producing about 128.07 million cubic metres compared to roughly 136.57 million. Water production in other governorates fell 3.4%, reaching around 149.90 million cubic metres from about 155.19 million during the same period last year.
Dhofar was the primary exception to the nationwide decline, with water output increasing by 3.4% to approximately 52.68 million cubic metres from about 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest utility data reveal contrasting national trends for electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026—while electricity generation grew at both total and net levels, overall water production remained below the comparable period in 2025.
